Foodie Review Friday – Berthillon’s Ice Cream

Berthillon – a place of all your ice cream dreams and needs. So delicious, so luxurious, so inexpensive is this ice cream, that you will make this place one of your favourite holiday destinations – and I certainly have! For me a trip to Paris is no longer complete without a visit to this astonishing little ice cream shop on the Île Saint-Louise. It was only due to my cousin taking me there one day that I uncovered this little gem, and I’ve loved it ever since. In a way it’s funny that an ice cream shop has become a must go to place!

Next to Le Flore en I'lle, there is a small ice cream parlour attached to the cafe where you can buy Berthillon Ice cream. There is also the main shop in the middle of the island.

For a little bit of history – this ice cream shop has transformed over the years into a manufacturer of luxury ice cream and sorbets, yet has always retained its primary store on the island, making it a charming visit. Its fame amongst the French came into being in 1961 when the French restaurant guide Gault Millau visited and wrote about the hidden gem. And it is for good reason that this place is so famous. The ice cream is truly astonishing with Pistachio being my favourite flavour to get. So remember to say “Je prend le pistache” at the counter if you want to try out what I consider the best flavour! There are many different flavours to choose from including salt and caramel, vanilla, and other unique flavours too worth trying. You can choose to sit in the seated area, or as I have always done, take your ice cream to go, and walk around to take in the sites.

Mini review:

Atmosphere and Location: 5/5
Service Quality: 5/5
Cost: $

Whether you are just coming from the Notre Dame area, or from north of the river, the shop is conveniently located and hard to miss. It makes a great little rest stop and the rest of the island is a fantastic little shopping experience where there are plenty of little boutiques and Parisian fashion shops. Another nice addition to your travel experience are the plethora of street performers like in the video above. They certainly make the place come to life. Though not every performer is so good… or interesting…

So, all-in-all, make Berthillon and Île Saint-Louise a nice little pit stop as you walk around the city. The ice cream will definitely be a foodie experience like no other!

Thank you for reading, and do comment below with any of your own ice cream shop recommendations. It would be interesting to see if anyone thinks there is a better place than Berthillon!
