So before continuing on with what happened next wi So before continuing on with what happened next with the Third Estate, let’s go back a bit and discuss the useless King. Truly he was a national disgrace to France and the monarchy - at a time, he was called out in papers about his inability to produce an heir with his wife Marie-Antoinette (a whole other story of disappointment). Although it is believed he had a condition which made bedroom activity painful, for 7 years his marriage was unconsummated and his impotence spread to the local populace, discrediting him further. In addition, his policy choices and national decisions further led France into a crushing debt. The way they handled the American Civil war left them with sums spent that would never be paid back (after all it was a gift right?) and high taxes on ever decreasing agricultural stores were crippling the nation and brewing anger from the bottom up. He could do nothing right, except throw a banging party! No seriously, while the nation suffered, the nobility would still throw lavish parties and ignore national problems. So in summary, a useless king, who through his own incompetence allowed a Third Estate to slowly rise and take control of France. From tomorrow the story continues...⠀

So much like my story of the day before, the milit So much like my story of the day before, the military parade is a big part of Bastille Day. Since 1880, the military has gone on parade each year, making it one of the longest standing military annual parades in the world. They march along the Champs-Elysées in Paris before the French government officials. Across the nation le 14 juillet is celebrated with fireworks, more parades and parties - actually when I was there we tried to go clubbing in Paris and literally everywhere was packed to the brim that there was no real enjoyment going in to become a sardine! As for other traditions, you will hear the French motto of Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité (“liberty, equality and fraternity”) and people may break into singing La Marseillaise. Yet all this originates from a time where France was at breaking point. Back in 1789, France had just gone through a rough summer leaving few agricultural crops available, and with increasing national debt, the King (Louis XVI) had to do something which hadn’t been done in over a century - call the Estates-General - an assembly of the clergy, the nobility and representatives of the general populace. This ended with the Third Estate (the general populace) breaking away from this assembly…. (continued slowly over the course of the week)⠀

So before we get into history and facts, I’d lik So before we get into history and facts, I’d like to share a short story of my first experience of Bastille Day. Pure chance. That’s what it was that led myself and two friends to experiencing this celebratory day. We had gotten together early in the year to plan our highschool graduation trip and decided to go to Paris as soon as we broke for the summer holidays. Through coincidence of when we broke from school (Early/Mid-July), and planning our travels to leave in the immediate days, our trip coincided with us being in Paris at the time of the independence day. It wasn’t until we were in Paris and chatting to my family that we realised this day was taking place, but how fortunate we were. As with any indepence day celebrations, there is a military parade, and despite my reservations against a military force, the display of regiments and military vehicles was certainly impressive. I remember distinctly how wonderful the air show looked and how the french flag was painted into the sky. Truly a sight to see…. Ruined only by the fact that many tourists and locals at the parade were holding up large ipads to take videos! If that wasn’t bad enough, then the fact that they were shaking about the video really got to my nerves as someone who is a cinematography fan. I would hate to watch the playback. Besides the military parade which is a must-see of the morning, the rest of day was spent looking at exhibited military vehicles such as choppers and aircraft, parked in gardens for the day, as well as free entry to the louvre! Best part of the day is this free entry and what makes Bastille day a great time to coincide with your holiday.⠀

Having recently been talking about the cooking rev Having recently been talking about the cooking revolution and touching on the French revolution, I thought this week would be a great week to go deeper into the history. And so to start things off, let’s start with Bastille Day - the French independence day. Celebrated every year on the 14th July, this day dates back to when the common people took control of the Monarchy which was to later be abolished. Louis XIV would rule from his throne no more, and instead be a figurehead supporter until the day of his death. Follow along this week for facts and short stories about the Revolution...⠀
